SCG Muangthong United fans were disappointed to see their beloved Kirin lose on their opening match of the season. PT Prachuap were clearly outplayed all match, but a penalty call was the Kirin's undoing.
The disappointment of fans can be tempered with the fine performances of the Kirin newcomers. Dang Van Lam started between the pipes. Although he was never really tested (except on the penalty shot), his passion and energy were clear for everyone to see and appreciate.
The first half was dominated with SCG Muangthong United pressuring deep in the Prachuap end from early on. Suphanan in the right back role drove towards the net often, and a hard strike forced Natthapong, the Prachuap keeper, into a difficult deflection over the bar.
Suphanan along with midfielders Sarach Yooyen, Lee Ho, and Heberty Fernandes produced some fine combinations in moving the ball forward for attempts at goal.
Sarach Yooyen came close to opening the scoring at 20 minutes when he volleyed the cross towards goal from near the penalty spot.
Heberty Fernandes had a free kick opportunity from prime real estate, but his hard drive was wide of the target.
Oh Ban Suk showed the quality he was signed for with some fine steals, including stripping the ball from Caion when he looked to be through to goal.
At 28' the speed of the Prachuap counter attack forced Suphanan into a slide tackle on Matheus inside the box. Matheus ended up on the turf, and the referee pointed at the penalty spot. So despite dominating possession and chances, with almost a dozen corner kicks to their favour, the Kirin finished the first half trailing Prachuap 1-0.
The Kirin charged into the second half with the same intensity and dominance. Adisak Kraison came close, just missing the cross sent in from Aung Thu. The striker from Myanmar showed good speed to keep the ball in at the touch line and then generate the cross.
The pressure continued and at 65' Aung Thu then had a great scoring chance when Heberty flicked a pass onto his foot, but his strike was over the bar.
Looking for a change, at 70' Coach Pairoj brought in veteran Mario Gjurovski for Aung Thu. A short while before Suphanan had to be subbed off after being injured in a tackle, with Suporn taking to the pitch.
At 81', the Kirin were again close to scoring when Weerawut charged at the net from an angle, but the shot scraped past the far post.
Prachuap continued to poke away attempted crosses and passes, and simply sent the ball down field, with Muangthong United being repeatedly forced to build up the attack from their end.
With the defeat SCG Muangthong United will continue to develop their shape and work through line up decisions. SCG Muangthong United will have to make some adjustments quickly as they travel to play one of the league's top prospects, Bangkok United, next Saturday, March 2nd, 2019.
