SCG Muangthong United knock Bangkok Glass FC out of the League Cup with a solid 5-2 victory. Entering the second half 2-2, the Kirin stepped up the pace to score 3 goals and secure their spot in the next round.
Totchtawan Sripan knew he would have a tough match on his hands against fifth place Bangkok Glass, and started a strong team. Teerasil, Leandro Assumpcao, and Siroch led the attack. In the midfield Tossawat, Cheryl Chappuis, and Heberty Fernandes were to be the play makers. The defensive line consisted of centre backs Naoaki Aoyama and Celio Santos, with Tristan Do out on the right, and Theerathon the left. As expected, Kawin started in goal, given his excellent record of clean sheets against Bangkok Glass.
The Kirin started the half slowly, and it was Bangkok Glass with the first attempt at goal when Campos shot from distance was wide of the goal. A few moments later Glass threatened again with the free header on a corner, however the attempt was wide. The inability of the Kirin defense to pick up attackers in the box was going to cost them later. Theerathon, as well as Teerasil and Heberty, made several steals at half way to turn the play back in the Kirin's favour.
The match also became more physical, and the referee was busy stopping plays and issuing verbal warnings. A late tackle on Tossawat had the fans looking for the yellow card.
By the 15th minute the quality of play from SCG Muangthong United improved. Leandro Assumpcao's attempts to carry the ball, or chasing to the touch line drew corners.
With the better play from the Kirin chances were created. Teerasil took the rebound of Tristan Do's cross to knock in a goal at 27 minutes.
Yet Bangkok Glass hit back almost immediately when Surachart had a free header at the far post after Tristan Do was unable to deny the cross.
SCG Muangthong United went ahead again a few minutes later. Hard work from Tristan Do on the right wing led to room for a low cross towards the box, and Heberty Fernandes read the play well and ran on to it for his first goal of the night.
Yet the Glass equalized again, in extra time of the first half following a miscue with Leandro and Theereathon. A quick counter attack was not contained by Celio Santos.
Entering the second half with momentum, the Kirin came close early on, except for a goal line clearance from Bangkok Glass. Then Heberty scored the go ahead goal within 10 minutes. A turn over at centre pitch led to a 3-on-3 break with Teerasil leading the charge. Once at the box he slid the pass to the right and Heberty finished.
For the remainder of the half the match was in control of the Kirin, with excellent pressure on the ball in the Glass half causing turn overs and errors.
Leandro Assumpcao headed in with a fine finish off a free kick sent in by Heberty, the result of a fracas in the midfield that saw the red card handed to Bangkok Glass's Daniel Rodriquez who argued heavily with the referee for the second time. This gave Heberty plenty of time to line up his free kick and placed it perfectly near the penalty spot for Leandro's header.
To add insult to injury, the Kirin then added a fifth goal in extra time on another free kick. Heberty stepped forward for the attempt, which was from a range perfect for his abilities, and the kick curled past the keeper on the far side.
SCG Muangthong United will play their next Thai League match on Sunday against bottom team Super Power Samut Prakhan. Details as to the next League Cup fixture will be announced in the coming weeks.
