The 2017 WAR OF HEROES season began with a fast paced, physical, and exciting contest that saw SCG Muangthong United dominate Bangkok Glass F.C. The tempo and skill on display was a treat for the 12,000+ fans in attendance.
Coach Totchtawan Sripan fielded the best squad available, with new signings South Korean Lee Ho, and Brazilian Celio Santos not yet ready for the starting line up, and striker Adisak Kraisorn still recovering. Instead, Wattana got the nod in the midfield, and Adisorn Promnak filled in the back line.
The first half exemplified high quality football, as both teams pressured hard and moved well off the ball to close down opportunities.
SCG Muangthong United came out of the half 1-0 ahead after Xisco chased down a rebound after a Theerathon free kick. This moments after Xisco had scored, but had the goal called back offside.
The Kirin were to have several good chances, including Cleiton Silva's chip over the keeper towards the empty net, though the attempt was over the bar into the top netting.
Bangkok Glass also had chances, the best being a hard low drive from Costa Rican national Ariel Rodríguez, and Kawin had to be quick to smother.
The fast paced match and close battles were intense, and Theerathon dueled frequently with Bangkok Glass midfielder Jhasmany Campos (Bolivia). One collision at 24 minutes saw both players slow to get up, and the referee intervened, though no yellow card ensued. By the 36th minute Campos was shown the yellow, however, when his tackle upended Theerathon once again.
The second half saw Bangkok Glass explode from the first whistle, and the Rabbit created several key scoring opportunities in the first 10 minutes. Kawin had to be sharp, and one shot rolled across the goal line and looked to be the equalizer.
Yet the Kirin maintained the pressure and rebounded with 3 second half goals.
At 62 mins Cleiton Silva headed in the cross from Theerathon, who had been nicely set up by Chanathip, who kept the ball away from Bangkok Glass defenders before laying out the small pass for Theerathon.
Xisco moments later add his third goal with strong pressure on the back line, forced an error, and followed the loose ball for the tap in to the net.
Tochtawan subbed off the hard working Tristan Do for Peerapat, and was rewarded when the left back used his speed and energy to out run the defender to score with a nicely placed shot.
With the Kirin 4 goals up more substitutions followed, and Celio Santos was handed his debut, coming in for the remaining 5 minutes of the match
The Kirin now will prepare for the season opening home match, next Friday February 17, an 8PM kick off.
