SCG Muangthong United notched their 13th straight win and Teerathon scores in his debut match.
SCG Muangthong United’s head coach Totchtawan Sripan elected to rest star midfielder Chanathip for this match, however new signing and captain of Thailand’s national team Teerathon Boonmatun was given his first start as a Kirin. With Naoaki Aoyama still injured, Suphan was handed the centre back role.
Thirty minutes in and SCG Muangthong United had numerous chances at goal. Mario Abrante’s header was steered wide at the last second by Nakhonratchasima keeper, Kampon. Both Tanaboon and Adisak had powerful headers also just wide of target.
Theerathon’s presence on the pitch had an immediate effect. Playing in the midfield, he was involved in attacking and defending, roaming from left side to right as play dictated. His presence was poignantly felt at 32 mins when he took a pass from Teerasil Dangda and hit a low left footed shot into the far corner.
Yet Nakhonratchasima were to get one back just before the half. A through pass to Tagbajumi was not cleared by Suphan or Mario Abrante, allowing him alone into the box for the strike off the right post and in.
Marco Tagbajumi had scored three goals coming in to this match. The Nigerian born player has experience playing in Norway’s top division, and joined Nakhon Ratchasima this season. He was making life difficult for SCG Muangthong United’s centre backs, and frequently would take control of the long balls and seek to threaten goal.
Yet SCG Muangthong United’s Mario Abrante made up for the earlier header he was denied by tapping in a loose ball from a corner kick to put the Kirin ahead going into halftime. It was a goal Nakhonratchasima were not happy with, and the team swarmed the referee, requiring security to escort the officials off the pitch.
In the second half, SCG Muangthong United maintained control and continued to apply pressure, with Nakhonratchasima rarely getting a foot on the ball.
Adisak Krisorn was to add two goals of his own during the second half, capping off fantastic efforts by Peerapat with assists each time.
One concern for SCG Muangthong United will be the health of Tanaboon, carried off by stretcher, to be replaced by Datsakorn Thonglao. Missing another key defender might be a problem of the club.
Mario Abrante was subbed off with just five minutes remaining to allow new signing Adisorn Promrak to also make his debut for SCG Muangthong United.
The Kirin have little time to rest, however, as on Wednesday they travel to Leo Stadium to face third place Bangkok Glass. Nonetheless, the thrilling win, and the galvanising presence of Teerathon, means the club will be entering this challenging match with confidence and momentum on their side.
