SCG Muangthong United fans are a diverse group. Of course, the local fans from Thailand form the core of the supporters, but did you know fans can come from near and far? At some matches fans have flown in from Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam, or even Hong Kong. As well, there’s a growing number of Westerners attending matches.
Some are season ticket holders, but there are others that come to a home match now and then, when they have time. Many are working in Thailand, often as English teachers, or in other professions such as the oil industry, or food and beverage.
A case in point is “Woody” (pictured), who moved to Thailand from Arlington, Virginia, USA. Working
as a teacher, Woody began watching Thai professional football 3 years ago, but only started coming to SCG Muangthong United matches on a regular basis last season. He says, “We all love watching football. And it is great that we can have a professional team close by to cheer on.”
After watching the match with Bectero (which Muangthong lost 1-0), Woody said, “The team played hard. Unfortunately we couldn’t put one in the back of the net. We’ll get them next time.”
Woody and his friends are such fans of SCG Muangthong United and Thai football his son's middle name is “Chanathip” after the football star. The Bectero match was Woody’s lucky night as he was able to have Chanathip sign his just purchased 10 Year Commemorative Jersey.
So next time you are at the SCG Stadium look around for Woody and perhaps Little Chanathip. They are part of the diverse and special fan base that is SCG Muangthong United.
