Despite the return of Kim Dong Jin and Thitipan to the starting 11 SCG Muangthong shocked their fans with a home loss to Chainat Hornbill. Missing from the line-up was team captain Datsakorn Thonglao, who is out for probably the rest of the season with a knee injury.
Despite Muangthong dominating possession in the first 20 minutes, Chainat’s goal at the 19th minute was similar to the two goals scored by Suphanburi, a cross and a header into the net.
The first half ended 1-0 for Chainat, though Muangthong United pressed hard. Chainat often played all 11 players in the box when defending, frustrating Muangthong’s efforts to find a path to goal. Chainat also had 3 yellow cards in the first half, revealing how closely they had been marking Muangthong. Yet Muangthong remained vulnurable to headers, as Chainat came close at the 39th minute with an attempt off the post.
Chainat had the better share of the ball for most of the second half, netting their second goal in a counter attack at the 64th minute. Muangthong United were to have good chances, with shots from Cleiton Silva, Teerasil, and Thitiphan, all just wide of the target.
Muangthong pressure finally paid off at the 74th minute when Sivakorn’s free kick found it’s way in to the net. They added a second with a hard low strike from Chananan. Yet Chianat picked apart the Muangthong defense for a third time just 2 minutes later to re-take the lead.
Muangthong United continued to press to the last second of the match, with multiple runs at goal including a last second goal line save by the Chainat keeper, but MTUTD were just not connecting to find the equaliser to salvage the point.
