The 2020 AFC U23 championship doubles as 2020 Olympic qualification for the summer games in Japan. Since Japan are hosting the Olympics, if they are also in the top three finishers it means three additional teams qualify. Team Thailand won the gold medal in 2017.
In July, Thailand brought in Akira Nishino to lead up the U23 and men's teams. The 64 year old played for 12 years with Hitachi Reysol before managing Japan's youth teams, as well as several J.League clubs. Most recently, he was at the helm for Japan in the 2018 World Cup, where Japan was the only Asian team to qualify into the elimination round, where they lost 3-2 to Belgium. As a player, Nishino represented Japan for two years, and has 12 caps.
