Today SCG Muangthong United confirm the appointment of Alexandre Gama as head coach for the duration of the 2019 season and beyond.
The 51 year old Brazilian coach brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the club. Gama has previously coached with Buriram United, Chiang Rai, and then Thailand U21 and U23 teams, before taking up the reins with the Kirin.
At today's press conference, Kirin Director of Football Mr. Ronnarit Suewaja said, "We are thrilled to have Coach Gama join us, and we look forward to great things together."
Gama commented, "Muangthong United is big club, with lots of history. I like a challenge, and our first job will to bring Muangthong out of this position. This is not the right place for this team. I know the players and like them, and the talent is good. We will work together."
Alexandre Gama's career in football is exclusively as head coach/manager, beginning with the youth teams for Brazilian clubs Fluminense and Internacional. He's coached some of the world's top players, including Brazilian international Marcelo, now with Real Madrid.
After stints in the UAE and South Korea, Gama came to Thailand in 2014 to take charge of Buriram United, leading them to two championships. After two years with Chiang Rai, Gama was selected to lead Thailand's U21 and U23 national teams, his latest assignment before deciding to join SCG Muangthong United.
The match between Gama and SCG Muangthong United is fitting as the Kirin have always sought to develop players for Thailand. The squad contains a number of current and former youth players, and the benefits will spill over to the development of the national team.
Gama will have only a few days of training before the next match, this Sunday June 16th when SCG Muangthong United play away at Chonburi FC. Kirin home fans will first have a chance to view Gama on the sidelines when the first leg of the season ends on Saturday June 22nd, a home match against Trat FC.
