There is no doubt Chonburi FC is one of the foundation teams that has helped to build the Thai professional football scene into what it is today. "The Sharks" have a strong fan base from the region, and they are passionate about football and are the driving force behind the team's development.
Suddenly, however, SCG Muangthong United emerged as the new team on the scene, and the team from the big city was set to challenge the status quo - and that meant Chonburi FC.
So when the Kirin were promoted into the Thai League in 2009 it immediately began the rivalry between these clubs, and now whenever the two teams meet it is considered the league's Classico match.
The first time ever the teams played each other it was a 5-2 victory for SCG Muangthong United, although Chonburi had gone ahead 2-0 and looked to be on track for an easy victory. Yet the Kirin responded with 5 goals. Of course, this was 2009, the season the Kirin were to win the league championship.
This Saturday's match is the 10th anniversary of that rivalry. Although both teams have changed over the years, the reputation and legacy continues and is as intense as ever.
Fans will not want to miss this historic encounter.
